What’s new for Azure Virtal Desktop – May 2024

Welcome to my latest blog post on Azure Virtual Desktop! May 2024 has brought finaly a lot of exciting new features and enhancements designed to streamline virtual desktop experience and bolster security. From the preview of client device redirection configuration using Microsoft Intune to the general availability of hibernate support for session hosts and autoscale, these updates are set to enhance both management and performance. Additionally, the introduction of Trusted Launch virtual machines in Azure Government and Azure operated by 21Vianet further strengthens the security posture of your virtual environments. Here a summary of al updates:

Client Device Redirection Configuration in Preview
  • Microsoft Intune now supports configuring client device redirection for Windows App and Remote Desktop app.
  • IT admins can set redirection scenarios based on group membership and device management status.
  • Additional capabilities include access restrictions based on OS version, app type and version, threat detection, and device status (jailbroken/rooted).
Quickstart Feature for Azure Virtual Desktop
  • The “Getting started” feature is now renamed to “Quickstart”.
  • Quickstart provides a streamlined onboarding experience in the Azure portal for setting up Azure Virtual Desktop environments.
  • Supports deployments with Microsoft Entra Domain Services or existing Active Directory Domain Services.
Hibernate Support for Session Hosts
  • Hibernate support for session hosts in a personal host pool is now generally available.
  • Allows pausing of unused session hosts to save resources.
Autoscale with Hibernate Support
  • Autoscale support for virtual machines using hibernate is now generally available.
  • Enables automatic scaling of session hosts while preserving their state.
Trusted Launch Virtual Machines
  • Trusted Launch virtual machines are now available in Azure Government and Azure operated by 21Vianet.
  • Enhances security by protecting against advanced attack techniques.
  • Available for new host pools or adding new virtual machines to existing host pools.
