In a brief announcement on Wednesday, 17 September 2025, Microsoft announced that Microsoft Dev Box will no longer accept new customers as of 1 November 2025. In this short blog post, I will discuss the news and highlight the implications for existing and new customers of Microsoft Dev Box. I will also share my personal opinion with you and give a brief outlook.
Microsoft Dev Box meets Windows 365
As mentioned in the introduction, Microsoft announced, somewhat surprisingly in my opinion, that it will discontinue the Microsoft Dev Box product as of 1 November 2025. This news was somewhat overshadowed by the many new features introduced in the Endpoint area (Intune & Windows 365).
Nevertheless, it is important to address this topic here in this blog post and give you a brief and concise overview of what this means for you now.
It may be wrong to say that Microsoft Dev Box is dead. The foundation of Microsoft Dev Box is based on Windows 365, and Microsoft has therefore decided to integrate the developer-specific features that Dev Box offers today into the Windows 365 portfolio.
Ultimately, consolidation should benefit all parties, especially developers and system operators. The aim is to continue to create flexible and seamless integration into enterprise identity and security, and in future it should be possible to manage this even more centrally.
Impact on existing customers
Current Dev Box users can keep using and growing their Dev Box setups while Windows 365 adds new features. Microsoft give customers help to switch over smoothly to Windows 365 as these new features become available.
You don’t need to take any action at the moment.
Potential New customers for Microsoft Dev Box
Microsoft will no longer accept new customers for the Dev Box service as of 1 November 2025.
If you are in the middle of a new potential Dev Box project, Microsoft recommends contacting the Microsoft Account Team to discuss the possibilities of Windows 365 and take a closer look at the solution.
My personal opinion
As I mentioned at the beginning, I am a little surprised by the announcement. So close to Microsoft Ignite, the Dev Box product will be merged with Windows 365.
Personally, I can understand why Microsoft has taken this step. I have had little contact with Microsoft Dev Box so far, but I have noticed that the whole management system is a bit opaque. Within the Azure portal, there was hardly any information about the machines for example. With the merge to Windows 365, I personally hope to see a major upswing for the service, especially as an alternative to Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop in the developer environment.
I will certainly be taking a closer look at Windows 365 over the coming weeks and months and will write blog posts about it when the time comes. Stay tuned and follow the journey from Microsoft Dev Box to Windows 365.
